Stadium - Wow, it looks fantastic - very shiny and new with great facilities for fans. Surrounded by London mega money (Westfield Centre etc.) that folk like us from north of Watford can only dream of. Very impressive and a good use of the former Olympic stadium I think. But on the downside, pretty souless! It''s in the middle of a park with nowt else close by, the pitch is a very long way from the seating (with the former running track space now covered in astroturf) + there was very little atmosphere in the ground - 39,000 + folk but all the noise came from the 500 + Stanley fans! Also £6 for a pasty!!! £6 FFS??? Come on peeps that''s just a joke!!! Match - pretty good and entertaining despite the lack of goals. Hammers clearly the better team but lacked cutting edge. Stanley defended well and created quite a few chances of their own. Could easily have been a cup upset on the night. But Payet''s last minute free kick won it. Was well impressed with the Stanley Ultras - they sang their hearts out incl I wanna be Stanley (to Anarchy in the UK) + had a great drummer. Hammers fans pretty quiet but probably not their usual crowd - lots of first timers like me due to cheap tickets/midweek etc. Glad to see Antonio get a run out too - boy from Forest done well.

Apparently Dimitri Payet scored a free-kick deep into injury time to earn West Ham a dramatic win against League Two Accrington Stanley in the EFL Cup, but I was already on my way back to Stratford station. A poor performance from West Ham: Accrington were more creative and their fans provided the only atmosphere, despite nearly 40,000 being present. Boos at half time meant Payet and Lanzini came on: after 70 minutes Antonio joined the fray but it seems one piece of individual brilliance won the game. As John Coleman put it: he earns more in a month than our whole squad earns in a season. Because he can do that. And we can''t.

West Ham v Accrington I had a terrible round of golf in the morning and left after seven holes in utter misery. It had been an absolute shambles. I fixed the wardrobe in the spare bedroom and also finished fixing Jessica''s train in the early afternoon. At 1430 I set off for my trip to London. Heather wished me Have Fun She was having an afternoon off from college as is usual on a Wednesday afternoon. I got to Caneby Corner and was diverted due to an accident. Having got back on to the A15 via a couple of small villages there were further hold ups at the roundabout at Lincoln. This was due to the same accident and people being diverted away from the A15 going northbound. Eventually I got past the trouble and the rest of the journey was at a good pace. I went via the M11 which proved to be the best option. I had tea in a McDonalds and then easily found somewhere to park close to the Olympic Stadium. It looked impressive from the outside. Inside I discovered that my seat was a long way from the actual pitch although it did give me a good view from behind the goal. I was in the Bobby Moore Stand. The West Ham fans had half filled their new home with a crowd of about 30,000 They gave a superb rendition of I''m forever blowing bubbles twice before the match. Aided by the superb PA system! Two minutes into the match I heard a much better chant of Iron than you would ever hear at Ganford Park! I could see at the other end of the ground a small section of the crowd that was Accrington Stanley. They were about 200 in number and could be heard above the 29,800 West Ham supporters! I wondered how many Grimsby would have brought to a similar fixture. My guess would be 2,000. The match started slowly. West Ham were the better side as expected but Accrington did have a resilient approach and even had a couple of chances. Half time arrived with the scoreline 0-0. The second half saw West Ham attacking the end I was behind but Accrington snuffed out all of their chances. A couple of times it seemed Accrington might even nick it. I left as the clock reached 90 minutes and as I was half way back to the van I heard a huge roar. It was confirmed by talk sport that West Ham scored in the sixth minute of added time by means of a free kick. I felt sorry for the Accrington team and supporters. It took a small while to navigate back to the M11 bug once there the journey was fast. I was in my bed at 0100am.
