Cardiff City vs Norwich City 3 - 1 Date: 30/10/2010 Venue: Cardiff City Stadium Attendance: 24,634 Referee: G Scott by Chris Nokes, from Cardiff City Stadium First half goals from Jay Bothroyd, Michael Chopra and Peter Whittingham were enough to see off a strong Norwich City side and move the Bluebirds to the top of the npower Championship. Bothroyd continued his impressive scoring streak with a simple header past Jon Ruddy after eight minutes. Norwich looked unsettled at the back, and the opening goal looked like it would open the floodgates. Four minutes later and Chopra doubled City''s lead. The striker was quick to react to a Bothroyd flick-on from a Heaton goal-kick, breaking inside the area and shooting home through the legs of Ruddy. Norwich had a superb spell of possession however midway through the half ,and were level after Wes Hoolahan bundled home a deep cross from Korey Smith on thirty-four minutes. But Cardiff retook their two goal advantage three minutes later, after Peter Whittingham tucked home a penalty following an Elliott Ward handball inside the area. The second half was much less eventful and Cardiff looked controlled and confident on the ball. Both sides had chances, though neither ''keeper was significantly troubled which meant the Bluebirds would hold on for a table-topping home win. Chronological Report With Cardiff going into this game as one of the form teams in the division, the home crowd at Cardiff City Stadium were expectant of a strong start by the Bluebirds. The men in blue did not disappoint and looked extremely dangerous early on, with striker Jay Bothroyd at the heart of each attack. The former Wolves man came into the game in a rich vein of form and was the first to test visiting goalkeeper John Ruddy with a stinging long range drive that was well parried by the former Everton stopper. From the resulting corner, Bothroyd again came close to finding the opener when he headed over from close range, although to be fair, his reactions would have had to have been lightning quick to have converted the chance. Norwich, though, have proven themselves to be a dangerous side on the road this season and only a fine block from Cardiff left back Lee Naylor on Corey Smith prevented a real problem for Bluebirds goalie Tom Heaton. However, with just under ten minutes gone Cardiff were able to break the deadlock and it was the man of the hour Jay Bothroyd taking all the congratulations off his teammates. It came in similar circumstances to the chance he had missed earlier when a Peter Whittingham corner was headed goalwards by Gabor Gyepes, but this time Bothroyd was able to place his close range header under the bar for his twelfth goal of the season. GOAL: CARDIFF CITY 1-0 NORWICH CITY (Bothroyd 8) Prior to this season, Bothroyd had not been coveted for his goalscoring record but his ability to link play so effectively. Three minutes after his goal, he proved he has certainly not lost that side of his game when he expertly flicked on a long punt upfield to the path of strike partner Michael Chopra. Chopra found a gap in the Norwich defence and expertly lifted the ball past Ruddy to double the home side''s advantage. GOAL: CARDIFF CITY 2-0 NORWICH CITY (Chopra 12) Although two goals down, with the way that Norwich attacked so vociferously you always felt that the Canaries were never out of the tie. Gabor Gyepes was the next Cardiff man to deny a Norwich player with the big Hungarian following up on his own mistake to deny Simeon Jackson. Although the Canadian forward was well denied on that occasion, two minutes later he should really have scored after being played in by his strike partner Grant Holt. Holt had hooked the ball over to Jackson after a Mark Hudson mistake and the former Gillingham man was only able to strike the ball straight at Heaton with the whole goal to aim at. After this frenetic opening twenty minutes in terms of chances, the action in front of goal calmed down for a ten minute period before being sprung back into life via the exciting Norwich midfielder Wes Hoolahan. Firstly, Hoolahan was denied from distance by Heaton after the Cardiff defence had foolishly invited the Irishman to shoot. A minute later and the former Blackpool man was able to grab a goal back for the visitors as he stooped bravely to put the ball past Heaton following a cross from the left hand side and reward the strong visiting support. GOAL: CARDIFF CITY 2-1 NORWICH CITY (Hoolahan 34) The goal pulled back was certainly deserved on account of the pressure Norwich had put on the Cardiff defence without reward, but all of this hard work was undone five minutes later as Cardiff were awarded a penalty after Elliot Ward handled in the area. Peter Whittingham stepped up for the Bluebirds and clinically found the corner of the net to restore their two goal advantage. GOAL: CARDIFF CITY 3-1 NORWICH CITY (Whittingham Pen 37) As the game approached the half time interval, Norwich once more went on the attack in a bid to reduce the deficit and were presented with a chance through top scorer Holt. The former Shrewsbury striker blasted over from close range after he had outbattled the Cardiff defence to the ball in the area. Although, the Canaries may have felt aggrieved to be going into the break two goals behind, with virtually the last kick of the half they could have gone further behind. A fantastic piece of defending from Leon Barnett prevented Michael Chopra from doubling his tally for the day when the former Newcastle striker looked certain to poke the ball home from close range. HALF TIME: CARDIFF CITY 3-1 NORWICH CITY With such a free-flowing first half, it was down to Cardiff as the home side to impose themselves at the start of the second forty-five with a solid display. The Bluebirds did just that and twice came close to grabbing their fourth goal of the game through Chris Burke and Michael Chopra who were denied both times by the Canaries goalie Ruddy. Although the second half matched the first half in terms of intensity, it was struggling to compete in the department of chance creation and for long periods of the second forty-five both goalkeepers had little to do. In a desperate effort to work their way back into the match, the visitors made a double substitution, introducing two attacking players in the hope of breaking down the Bluebirds defence. Substitution - (Norwich City) - OFF Simon Lappin, ON Anthony McNamee Substitution - (Norwich City) - OFF Simeon Jackson, ON Chris Martin It was not until the last fifteen minutes of the game until the action in front of goal picked up once more, as Bothroyd unleashed a wicked half volley from distance that clipped the crossbar and went over. Chris Burke was next to test the goalkeeper, although the flying Scot''s long range strike was comfortable for Ruddy to claim. Substitution - (Cardiff City) - OFF Craig Bellamy, ON Jason Koumas Jay Bothroyd was clearly on the hunt for a second goal and came close with ten minutes remaining as his curled effort from the right hand side of the area was tipped around the post by Ruddy for a corner. Although Ruddy did well to prevent Bothroyd from scoring on that occasion, he was grateful for his defence three minutes later as substitute Jason Koumas slid the ball across goal from the left hand side of the area. With Seyi Olofinjana waiting to pounce, the Canaries defence managed to put the ball clear for the temporary safety of a corner. Substitution - (Cardiff City) - OFF Michael Chopra, ON Stephen McPhail Substitution - (Norwich City) - OFF Wes Hoolahan, ON Oli Johnson With the match drawing to a close, a Koumas chip was the closest either side got to changing the scores, the on-loan Wigan midfielder''s effort drifting over the bar for a goal kick. For Cardiff, they can be pleased that they didn''t allow the visitors a route back into the match through solid defending, and with the full time whistle came another welcome win. With QPR''s failure to beat Burnley, the Bluebirds were also celebrating a place at the summit of the npower Championship. FULL TIME: CARDIFF CITY 3-1 NORWICH CITY CARDIFF CITY: Heaton, McNaughton, Naylor, Hudson, Gyepes, Whittingham, Chopra (McPhail), Bothroyd, Burke, Olofinjana, Bellamy (C) (Koumas). Subs not used: Marshall, Keogh, Blake, Matthews, Wildig. NORWICH CITY: Ruddy, Martin, Crofts, Holt (C), Jackson (Martin), Hoolahan (Johnson), Smith, Lappin (McNamee), Barnett, Ward, Smith. Subs not used: Rudd, Gill, Fix, Askou.
