AFC Wimbledon 2 - 3 Bristol Rovers Former Brighton and Celtic defender Virgo joined Bristol Rovers in June Adam Virgo's late penalty for Bristol Rovers condemned AFC Wimbledon to defeat on their Football League debut.
Scott McGleish fired Rovers ahead with a low angled drive, before Matt Harrold nodded in from six yards to give new boss Paul Buckle a dream start.
Jamie Stuart pulled one back when he headed in Sam Hatton's free kick.
Substitute Charles Ademeno equalised with a smart turn and shot in the box but Virgo converted from the spot to win it after Brett Johnson handled.
The two sides were separated by two divisions last season, with Rovers subsequently relegated from League One.
AFC Wimbledon completed their meteoric rise through the non-league since being formed in 2002 - when Wimbledon FC were relocated to Milton Keynes - by beating Luton Town on penalties in the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final.
There was a carnival atmosphere at Kingsmeadow before kick-off, but that was soon deflated by two goals in three minutes from the visitors.
McGleish, one of 10 debutants in the Rovers starting line-up, grabbed the first, drilling the ball low past Seb Brown after Matt Gill had dispossessed Ricky Wellard as he tried to bring the Dons keeper's throw under control.
The veteran striker then seized on the rebound after Brown had saved another shot to turn provider by crossing for Harrold to head in.
Rovers keeper Scott Bevan smothered at Luke Moore's feet to keep his side's two-goal lead intact, but was then left helpless as Stuart powerfully flicked home Hatton's precise delivery to go down in history as the scorer of AFC Wimbledon's first Football League goal.
Harrold was denied a second on the stroke of half-time by a combination of Gareth Gwillim's brave block and crossbar, while after the break Brown had to be alert to keep out Gill's snap-shot.
The Dons came increasingly into the game and grabbed a deserved equaliser when Ademeno pounced on Lee Minshull's knock down to turn and shoot past Bevan from eight yards three minutes after coming on.
But after Brown had pulled off a string of saves to keep his side on terms, there was a sting in the tail as Johnson flung an arm at a hanging cross and Virgo coolly sent the Dons keeper the wrong way from the spot.

AFC Wimbledon manager Terry Brown told BBC London 94.9:
It was a very eventful game and I just have an overiding feeling of disappointment at the way we played today.
We need to play better than that and we can play better than that and we looked nervous today.
We never really looked comfortable at the back.
Bristol Rovers manager Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Bristol:
It was exciting. I tried to say to the players let's get on the front foot, try and get excited and win games and today we've done that.
I'm positive our attempts on goal outweighed Wimbledon's and this was a tough place to come to today.
I thought our supporters were first class and didn't disappoint in any shape or form.

Travelled down with Hibs, Steve and Lee in Marks car. Had a nightmare journey - Lee took us down a deadend lane on the way to Marks and then we caught a load of traffic on the M25 and only just got to the game on time despite allowing over three hours for a two hour trip. We heard the kick off wistle from the turnstiles. It was an excellant game for the neutral. Bristol Rovers went ahead and the two ahead within a few minutes. Just before half time Wimbledon managed to get one back with a header right in front of us. In the second half they pulled it back to 2-2 before conceding a late penalty to lose on their league debut. It was a good occasion however and I am glad we went when we did. I am sure WImbledon will stay up as they worked hard and played quite well but somebody needs to tell the keeper to start kicking it rather than throwing it out!
Stopped at my Grandads on the way back with a tandoori chicken and chips. Ipswich won 0-3 away at Bristol City and we watched final score with Grandad before heading off.

Went with Hibbs,Pagey and Lee to this historic game for Wimbledon. Their 1st ever league game !! We missed kick off trying to find a parking space but when we made it to the ground we were treated to a decent game with 5 goals and a late winner. Had dinner at Pageys Grandads on the way home.

I have never looked forward to a neutral game as much as this one - rather a momentous occasion, with AFC Wimbledon only taking only nine years to rise from the lower leagues to the football league after their creation following the divide from the MK Dons - A lot of football fans all over the country are going to keep an eye on their results throughout the course of the season I''m sure, as they''ll respect what the club & fans stand for and the journey they''ve been on!! Their 1st ever league game, live on sky & a complete sell out. Went with Pagey, Barnard and Ghout and I drove - Usual punctual arrival from the lads - Only 30 mins late and the usual traffic on the M25, meaning we arrived at the ground literally as the game kicked off. Was a slight lack of quality to the game but a lot of passion and after it settled down The Pirates took a 2-0 lead but after scoring each side of half time the Wombles got back to level terms only for Rovers to score a pen right at the death to win 3-2. Shame the Dons could not win their first league game but it was great to be there to experience it. Went via Rob''s grandads on the way home and grabbed some Tandorri chicken & chips en route, hear on the radio that ITFC had won 3-0 at Bristol City (great result & start to the season!!) and then after what seemed like a never ending tour of the capital''s suburbs we eventually found the A1 and headed home. Quote of the day has got to go to Rob''s grandad, who offered us lads to get our hands on his hoe... PRICELESS!! Another good day and a memorable one at that.
