This was a massive day in Charltons history. Blackburn Rovers were flying high in the Premiership laying in second place behind Manchester United, and having some significant wins behind them in the Premiership, they were flying high!!!, Having visited the Valley 2 weeks previous to play this FA Cup 4th Rnd match they were surprised to not get a win coming away with a 0 - 0 draw and setting up this replay at Ewood Park. I drove to the game but when i got tere on a cold evening it the away end was full of Charlton support. To our right the stand was missing and all down one side resembled a building site, which would obviously affect home support, that said there were spaces in the Blackburn seats. Blackburn fielded the likes of Shearer, Hendry, Batty, and Sherwood and at home must have thought they would cruise the game. But the Blackburn faithful were to be dissapointed as into the second half and in front of the Blackburn supporters end the ball was played to an unknown Darren Pitcher who weaved his way forward past 2 or 3 tackles before hitting the ball from distance low into the bottom left hand corner just despairing of Tim Flowers outstretched fingers. Time seemed to drag until the final whistle and the drive home was a very pleasant one indeed. Darren Pitchers picture was on the back of most papers the next morning and i have the Daily Mail at home along with the programme and ticket stub.
