Assistants: A Hutchinson, D Unsworth Fourth Official: W Smallwood There is the one change from the side which beat Wrexham 3-1 last Sunday with Neil Ashton coming in for Richard Hope who drops out of the squad. Town started the game really brightly with a real high tempo to their game, they were getting a lot of balls in behind the visitors defence too cause them a number of problems. The first clear opening came 10-minutes into the game when Rickie Lambert got the ball out on the right, his pace took him past Marc Tierney and in on goal, he came in on the diagonal with Tierney snapping at his heels and drilled in a low shot which Mackenzie did well to block. Town's best chance came after a long ball down from the middle split the Rovers defence and found Asamoah, he flicked the ball past the out rushing Steve Phillips but the ball fell agonisingly wind of the post. The play was switching from end to end as neither side were holding onto the ball for long periods of time, this meant chances were dropping to both sides but nothing too much to test with keeper. The best chances were falling to Rovers and when the ball came to Lewis Haldane on the left he breezed past his markers, he burst into the area and then drilled in a low shot to the near post but Mackenzie was strong and put in an important block to deny Haldane. Rovers were looking the better side with half an hour gone and were showing a good turn of pace on the sodden Gay Meadow surface, but they couldn't create that clear cut chance to fully test Mackenzie. Town were putting a lot of effort in to close the visitors down and this was creating them some half chances, Ben Herd showed good strength after coming in field and then digging out a pass to find Dave Edwards run in on goal, he got a snap shot in but it was deflected behind for a Town corner. Rovers were beginning to give a number of free-kicks away around 35-yards out from their goal and Town were causing big problems from these, first off a Marc Tierney delivery found Leo Fortune-West at the back post, he got a good header in on goal but it hit the post and went behind the Rovers goal. Then minutes later another excellent Tierney delivery found the head of Dave Edwards who got a great header in on goal but Phillips was equal to it with a great save. The persistent rain was making the game hard going under foot with both sides making a number of mistakes when the ball hit a bobble or a foot slipped on the Gay Meadow surface. There was a hairy moment in the Town box right before the break for half-time when the ball seemed to hold up around the 6-yard box, Rovers had two good sites on goal but Town managed to get a foot in to block before Langmead wrapped his foot around the ball to clear it. half-time: 0-0 The first action of the half was a yellow card for Leo Fortune-West after he was adjudged to have caught Craig Disley, the Rovers player went to ground with ref Taylor not seeming like he would do anything other then give the foul until a clutch of Rovers players surrounded the ref and accused Fortune-West of using an elbow. Town were pressurising the Rover goal well but the visitors defence were holding strong, though when the ball came to Marc Tierney on the edge of the box he hit a superb first time volley which zipped just over the bar. With 15-minutes of the half gone Gary Peters made his first switch of the evening bringing on Michael Symes to replace Leo Fortune-West, Fortune-West had picked up a booking and had given a few fouls away. Town looked like they may grab the lead after a ball back towards the Rovers goal found Phillips coming out of his goal and Lescott running back to clear, Asamoah was also running in and his pace got him in just as Lescott missed his clearance, the ball ran on with Asamoah getting to it to pull it back but the ball had gone behind the touchline. The chances were still falling to the home side and Edwards showed good pace down the right to get the ball in behind the Rovers defence, the visitors managed to clear but only as far as Stewart Drummond, he hit a great first time drive which flashed just wide of the far post. Then moments later Drummond had another great chance after Tierney had done well to win a Town corner, Davies swung the ball over and there was Drummond with an excellent header but Phillips was equal to it and did brilliantly to tip the ball over the bar. Rovers had a great opening which they really should have scored from after a good break saw the ball dinked over the Town defence into the run of Stuart Nicholson, he only had Mackenzie to beat but luckily for Town he didn't hit a first time shot and took a touch, this allowed the Town defence to get back and Nicholson flashed his shot across the face of goal. With just under 15-minutes remaining it was Town who were asking the questions of the visitors, the heavy pitch was meaning that pretty passing football was out of the window so Town were getting direct balls into the box, this was causing Rovers to clear but the home side were winning the majority of the second balls, with an Asamoah looping header and the snap shot from Symes testing Phillips in the Rovers goal. Derek Asamoah had a great chance just before the 90-minutes were up and Craig Disley's ball back was under hit and this allowed Asamoah to pounce and gain possession, he took the ball towards goal and when he got into the box twisted and then turned and got a good shot in on goal with his right foot but it was straight into the body of Phillips. As the game entered 4-minutes of injury time the game burst into life thanks to ref Taylor, Derek Asamoah's pace took him into the Rovers box, he burst between two Rovers player and ref Taylor blew up for a penalty and then for some reason booked Craig Hinton, a second yellow which saw the Rovers player sent off. It was Derek Asamoah who placed the ball but he didn't look too sure, and when he took the kick it was along the ground and straight into the body of Phillips who had guessed the right way and pulled off a great stop.
