Bristol Rovers vs Carlisle 3 - 2 Date: 14/11/2009 Venue: Memorial Stadium Attendance: 5,862 Referee: G Hegley A last minute goal from Chris Lines saw Bristol Rovers end their run of consecutive defeats and pick up three points at the Memorial Stadium this afternoon. The Gas twice came from behind to beat Carlisle United 3-2 thanks to goals from Jo Kuffour, Jeff Hughes and Chris Lines. Rovers looked to be heading for their seventh defeat in a row after Carlisle took the lead for the second time with just 20 minutes left, but the home side showed a determination which helped them pick up the victory. Paul Trollope made four changes to the side that lost to Southampton in the first round of the FA Cup, reverting to a 4-4-2 formation. Goalkeeper Mikkel Andersen and striker Chris Dickson both returned to the side after being cup-tied for last weekend's game. Danny Coles returned from injury to replace Steve Elliott and Ben Swallow was handed his first league start in place of Andy Williams. The swirling wind contributed to a scrappy first half, with plenty of passes going astray, but it was the visitors who had the first spell of pressure. Byron Anthony did well to snuff out an early chance for the Cumbrians, before Carl Regan cleared a dangerous corner from Joe Anyinsah. Mikkel Andersen was then called into action to make a brilliant one-handed save after a mix up in the Rovers defence. Vincent Pericard found himself with the ball at his feet and the big keeper got down low to tip the shot over the bar. Moments later Andersen was forced to make another save, this time with his feet, when Anyinsah hit a low shot across the face of the Rovers goal. But Carlisle kept pushing forward and took the lead after 20 minutes when Rovers were again caught napping. Graham Kavanagh delivered a cross, which the Rovers defence failed to react to, and Ian Harte took advantage with his close range shot. Carlisle then sat back and stuck plenty of men behind the ball, frustrating Rovers, who were putting together some good moves but failing to get dangerous balls into the box. But hard work from Jo Kuffour saw the sides go in level at the break. The diminutive striker did well to hold up the ball under pressure, before managing to turn and shoot across the face of goal and in at the far post. Rovers then seemed to step up a gear, with Chris Lines and Ben Swallow putting together some dangerous runs from midfield. Dominic Blizzard had a couple of half chances, before Danny Coles produced a diving save from Lenny Pidgeley in the Carlisle goal to round off the first half. Rovers started the second half brightly, with the wind behind them. Jeff Hughes broke down the left from deep within his own half and fed the ball to Kuffour. Kuffour then tried to play in strike partner Dickson, who skied the ball over the bar. Dickson then had a speculative shot with his left foot, before being replaced by Darryl Duffy just after the hour mark. Ben Swallow, who had begun to fade after an impressive first half, made way for Andy Williams moments later. Carlisle found themselves in front again with less than 20 minutes left on the clock, former Bristol City player Richard Keogh rose up to head home a free kick. The crowd were stunned as it looked like it could lead to another defeat for Bristol Rovers. Paul Trollope made his final change of the game, bringing on Charlie Reece to replace Dominic Blizzard. But Rovers were not dead and buried. With less than 10 minutes to go Jeff Hughes hit an excellence left foot shot that beat Pidgeley and sailed into the top corner. With a draw looking the most likely result, Rovers won a corner with just seconds of injury time left to play. Chris Lines scrambled the ball over the line to give Rovers the much needed three points. The final whistle was met by scenes of jubilation as both the players and the fans celebrated the dramatic last minute goal. The team will now be hoping they can start a new run of victories when Gillingham visit the Memorial Stadium next weekend.
