Bristol Rovers vs Swindon Town 3 - 0 Date: 12/12/2009 Venue: Memorial Stadium Attendance: 7,613 Referee: Peter Walton Three strikes in the first half saw Rovers take maximum points from their local rivals at the Memorial Stadium this afternoon. The Pirates claimed back their spot in the play-offs from the Robins, who had been sitting one place above them before today's game. Andy Williams who started up from in place of Darryl Duffy, scored one goal, and set up another for Jeff Hughes during a man of the match performance. Jo Kuffour scored the third goal to give Rovers a comfortable lead going into the break, one that they managed to maintain for the rest of the game. Paul Trollope made three changes to the side that lost to Colchester last weekend. Danny Coles missed the game after picking up five yellow cards, and Pat Baldwin came back in to replace him after being unable to play against Colchester. Aaron Lescott returned from injury to secure the left back birth, with Jeff Hughes moving into midfield and Dominic Blizzard dropping to the bench. Rovers attacked the game from the off, with Kuffour, Williams and Hughes all keen to get into attacking positions as often as possible. But it was Swindon who had the first real chance but Jon-Paul McGovern was only able to find the side netting. It took just 11 minutes for Andy Williams to open Rovers' account. Baldwin played a ball over the top to Williams, who beat his man and sent a shot across the keeper and into the bottom left corner from a tight angle. And just two minutes later scorer turned provided when an excellent one-two between Williams and Hughes led to Rovers' second goal of the game. Hughes did well to control the ball out on the left and passed it out wide to Williams on the right, before making a run into the box. Williams fed the ball back into Hughes who netted from close range. Swindon almost got themselves back in the game after 25 minutes when the ball fell to Billy Paynter inside the box. His right foot shot grazed the right hand upright. It was a fast and furious opening period, and there seemed to be a real hunger about Paul Trollope's team, as the players fought for every ball. Chris Lines had a powerful shot from 20 yards out which fizzed over the bar as Rovers continued to take the game to the visitors. But it was Jo Kuffour who made it three with 10 minutes of the first half remaining. Stuart Campbell's free kick from the right of the box found the tricky striker who chested the ball down and then fired it past Swindon keeper David Lucas. Paynter saw a shot fly into the side netting and Steve Elliott was forced to make a goal line clearance from a Alan Sheehan as Swindon desperately tried to claw a goal back before half time. Swindon made a half time substitution with Alan O'Brien replacing Lecsinel Jean-Francois, and Jo Kuffour limped off to be replaced by Chris Dickson a few minutes after the restart. Mikkel Andersen was called upon to make a great one-handed save from O'Brien who managed to get on the end of a Paynter cross. Rovers continued to push forward in the second half and were unlucky not to extend their lead even further. Mark Wright shot just over the bar and Lucas was then called upon to make a save from a Dickson volley, before a low shot from Andy Williams was comfortably saved. Hughes, back at his attacking best down the left, almost doubled his tally, but it was another attempt that was denied by the wood work. Chris Dickson continued to trouble the Swindon defence and had a shot from the edge of the area that was just off target, he was then blocked by the keeper when he tried to follow up a chance from Mark Wright. Swindon substitute Danny Ward got on the end of a corner, but saw his effort fly straight into the arms of Andersen. Then Jonathan Douglas tried an ambitious over-head kick from close range which shot over the bar. The two substitutes Dickson and Darryl Duffy almost combined to make it 4-0 in the closing stages, but Lucas dived at the feet of Duffy to smother the ball. It was a good all round team performance with Rovers controlling the game well. Paul Trollope said earlier in the week that his side had been working hard to get both the defence and the strikers playing well in the same game - well today it looks like it is starting to work. Rovers now sit in sixth place in the League, and three goals and a clean sheet will have helped with the side's goal difference. Team: Mikkel Andersen, Carl Regan, Pat Baldwin, Steve Elliott, Aaron Lescott, Mark Wright (Charlie Reece 78), Chris Lines, Stuart Campbell, Jeff Hughes, Andy Williams (Darryl Duffy 75), Jo Kuffour (Chris Dickson 45) Substitutes: Anthony, Blizzard, Swallow, Evans Swindon Town: David Lucas, Scott Cuthbert, Alan Sheehan, Gordon Greer, Kevin Amankwaah, Lecsinel Jean-Francois (Alan O'Brien 46), Jonathan Douglas, Jon-Paul McGovern, Simon Ferry (Lloyd Macklin 67), Billy Paynter, Charlie Austin (Danny Ward 52).
