Took the opportunity of Palace's Carling Cup tie with Crawley being off to visit Falmer. Very nice and well designed. There was a huge queue for pre-purchased tickets for collection, approx 200 yards! Glad I got there early. Not sure the transport infrastructure is up to it though. I got to and from OK by train which were very full. There is a nice food van outside Falmer station, cheap and good fare.

Beautiful ground, excellent, friendly service from the staff at the ticket barriers & food areas. Absolutely hopless arrangemnets in getting to and from the ground. Got locked in the car park for about an hour after the game. The overweight referee unfortunately spoilt a good game.

By Luke Nicoli, at the Amex Stadium Albion picked up their first win under the Amex floodlights as an Ashley Barnes penalty secured a safe passage through to round two of the Carling Cup. On a night in which Gus Poyet''s men dominated possession against their League Two opponents but saw clear-cut chances at a premium, they made the all-important breakthrough on 67 minutes when Barnes converted after Will Buckley had been brought down in the box. With Albion missing eight out of 16 spot kicks last season, Barnes showed little sign of nerves as he stepped up to convert his first goal of the new campaign - and his fourth penalty for the club. Poyet had warned that Gillingham would prove difficult opponents and he was handed an early scare when Danny Kedwell saw a 20-yard drive cleared off the line by Albion skipper Gordon Greer. Albion responded immediately when Saturday''s two-goal hero, Buckley, latched onto Inigo Calderon''s right-wing centre, only to see his effort at goal blocked. Barnes also flashed an effort wide of the target inside the opening 12 minutes as Albion started to make the most of the expansive Amex Stadium pitch. Buckley, looking as lively as he did in his cameo against Doncaster, carved out another opening which he dragged wide, likewise Craig Noone - who also headed over a Marcos Painter cross - but Gills kept their discipline and shape as Albion struggled to test goalkeeper Ross Flitney. Barnes saw another effort drift wide but it could have been Gills who took the lead before the break when Kedwell rose above Calderon, only to see his header fly inches over the bar. Noone''s surging run and low drive two minutes after the re-start was, in fact, Albion''s first shot on target but Flitney was equal to it. Gills midfielder Charlie Lee saw a close range header pushed to safety by Casper Ankergren while Buckley''s surging run down the left resulted in his close-range shot hitting the side netting. The breakthrough finally arrived when the livewire Buckley broke into the box to be felled by Gills skipper Andy Frampton. Referee Brendan Malone had no hesitation pointing to the spot and Barnes stepped up to score. In a largely well contested tie, the game ended on a sour note when Gills sub Stefan Payne''s two footed lunge on Romain Vincelot was met with just a yellow card, while Ankergren and Painter were booked for their part in the ensuing melee. But the majority of the bumper 16,295 crowd went home happy as Albion toasted their second win in three days at their new home. TEAMS Albion: (4-5-1) Ankergren: Calderon, Dunk, Greer, Painter: Noone, Vincelot, Dicker, Bridcutt, Buckley: Barnes. Subs: Brezovan (GK), Navarro, Sparrow, Agdestein, Taricco, Cook, Bergkamp. Referee: Brendan Malone. Yellow cards: Dunk, Ankergren, Painter (Albion): Fuller, Lawrence, Martin, J Payne, S Payne, Montrose, Kedwell (Gillingham). Attendance: 16,295 (1328 Gillingham).
