Bristol Rovers vs Exeter City 1 - 0 Date: 01/12/2009 Venue: Memorial Stadium Attendance: 7,313 Referee: Andy Penn Rovers recorded their first clean sheet in 13 games to take all three points at the Memorial Stadium this evening. A first half goal from Darryl Duffy was all that separated the sides in a game where Rovers had to dig deep to secure victory. Both teams have been scoring and conceding goals a large number of goals this season, but those expecting a goal-fest went home disappointed. But Rovers, wearing armbands in memory of former Chairman Ron Craig who passed away yesterday, did what they had to do and picked up their third home win in a row. Paul Trollope made two changes to the side that lost 4-2 against Charlton. In defence Carl Regan returned to the side, with Byron Anthony dropping to the bench and in midfield Andy Williams made way for Mark Wright. Darryl Duffy kept his place in the side ahead of Chris Dickson and repaid the manager's faith by scoring the only goal of the game. It was a fast and furious opening exchange, as both teams sought to put their stamp on the game. The visitors had the first real opportunity of the encounter when Scott Goldbourne fed a good ball through to Richard Logan. Thankfully for Rovers, the angle was too tight and Logan's shot hit the post. Duffy had Rovers first chance of the match when he let fly with a long range shot which went wide of the post without worrying Grecian's keeper Andy Marriott. A great piece of play from Jo Kuffour and Mark Wright forced Marriott to make his first save of the game just before the half hour mark. Kuffour released Wright down the right and the midfielder cut in and let fly, only to see the keeper push the ball away. Rovers then broke the deadlock after 34 minutes. Kuffour made a run from the right of the box, Marriott parried the ball away, but only as far as Duffy who was on hand to fire home from close range. The second half saw both sides giving the ball away easily as Rovers fought to hold onto their lead. Exeter made a number of attack minded substitutions, including the introduction of former Gas favourite Marcus Stewart, as they sought to find an equaliser. Alex Russell had the Grecian's first chance of the half when he hit the upright with a shot from 20 yards. Paul Trollope also made some changes with Andy Williams replacing Mark Wright and then Ben Swallow coming on to replace Dominic Blizzard. The Exeter attack forced Mikkel Andersen to produce an acrobatic save to deny them an equaliser, before they fired a long range shot which whizzed past the post to safety. Exeter really piled on the pressure in the final 15 minutes as they threw men forward. Goldbourne had a shot deflected wide, before Logan nodded a dangerous ball into the ground. Rovers did enough to hang on and take all three points which pushes them back into the play-off positions. They also kept that vital clean sheet, which will hopefully give the defence a confidence boost after a rocky few months. Team: Mikkel Andersen, Carl Regan, Pat Baldwin, Danny Coles, Jeff Hughes, Mark Wright (Andy Williams), Chris Lines, Dominic Blizzard (Ben Swallow), Stuart Campbell, Darryl Duffy (Chris Dickson), Jo Kuffour Substitutes: Byron Anthony, Steve Eliott, Charlie Reece, Rhys Evans Exeter City: Andy Marriott, Steve Tully (Marcus Stewart), Danny Seaborne, Matt Taylor, Scott Goldbourne, Alex Russell, Ryan Harley, Bertie Cozic (Barry Corr), Richard Duffy, Adam Stansfield (Stuart Fleetwood), Richard Logan.
