Again, being at Uni in Birmingham and with City in the old 1st Division, this gave me plenty of opportunity to visit some of the West Midlands grounds. I was joined by a friend from Uni who had been to West Brom quite a few times, although she was actually a Man City supporter. We took a bus up to The Hawthornes which was pretty easy.  The ground itself was quite impressive and the away end was quite modern and had some good facilities. At the time City were really struggling and we were 23rd, just above Crewe Alexandra, prompting the song "The football league, is upside down, the football league is upside down.  We're going up with the Crewe!  The football league is upside down!" We found our seats were near the lower part of the away end, about 4 or 5 seats away from some laughable meshing that had been put in to designate the buffer zone between the two sets of fans.  The game was pay on the day and with Bristol being a mere hour away by mortorway, already a large amount of City fans were queueing to get in.  By kick off the stewards had very foolishly decided to move the meshing up so that more City fans could get in.  Cue worry and panic on the faces of the West Brom support as 100s of City fans made their way towards them.  Now there were only around 10 seats seperating both sets of fans.   West Brom went 1-0 up and City also suffered serious injuries to Mickey Bell and Ivan Testimetanu.  We all thought "Here we go again..."   At half time there was a lot of goading between City & West Brom fans given that they were so close together with some rather unsavoury chants being traded back and forth.  Suddenly bottles and plastic glasses were being lobbed between the two sets of fans, up the back of the stand (thankfully a good distance away from us), then it all kicked off as both sets of fans charged over the meshing and clashed.  Laughably after about 10 minutes after it had all died down, the West Midlands Constabulary turned up.  The game was delayed for 15 minutes.  I apologised to my friend who responded "Don't worry...I'm from Manchester" which made me laugh!   City came out fighting and got 2 goals back to take the lead (Brown and Akinbiyi).  We were holding on for grim life and desperately needed a win.  As the clock ticked round to 95 minutes I remember a man behind me saying through gritted teeth "If there's any justice in the world...let us win!!"  His anguish was shared as the ball fell to Lee Hughes to score a 96th minute equaliser and break our hearts, before doing his trademark stupid dance which I absolutely detested him for.
